Defeating the Purpose: iHome2go Edition

So there I was - in bed and watching Super Troopers (albeit heavily edited) on Comedy Central. It’s a fine movie, to be sure. So the station cuts to a break, and a gamut of commercials comes on. I usually pay commercials no mind, but being an Apple fan, I couldn’t help but notice an advertisement for a new product from iHome. iHome, if you didn’t know, is a brand within SDI Technologies and their claim to fame is making a really nice and relatively inexpensive iPod speaker base station. You know, for when you’re at home and you have your music on your iPod, but you don’t want to carry it around with your earbuds.

I don’t own one personally but from the experience I’ve had with it, I would say it’s a pretty decent product that definitely does what it’s supposed to do. It’s nice for when you’d like some ambiance in your home and you can’t be bothered with a DLNA device or something like AirTunes. (Or even old-fashioned CDs.) Well, that commercial I was telling you about in the first paragraph wasn’t actually for the iHome speaker base. It was for an all-new product that they’re rolling out called iHome2Go.

Yep, that little thing right there is actually a portable boom box for your iPod. A portable iHome, if you will. I mean no ill will towards SDI Technologies or the iHome brand of electronics, but this may be the most unintentionally bad idea to ever possibly emerge from the rise of iPod. Why would you make it possible for the legion of plebes running around with the High School Musical soundtrack on their iPods to force that upon me? Honestly, what were you even thinking? I can’t even see a logical use of this thing aside from to piss people off. There is a very, very good reason that iPods don’t have a built-in speaker, and you guys totally circumvented that. Way to defeat the purpose, SDI Technologies.
